Noted for his skilful use of pencils to create lifelike drawings, artist Darnell Wilson is well on his way of becoming one of Guyana’s notable artists.

In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Darnell said he has been artistic as long as he can remember.

After graduating from St. Rose’s High, Darnell attended the Guyana Technical Institute and then Burrowes School of Art.

“I have always loved being artistic. I had a box full of drawings and some books too. One I still have. Being artistic is somewhat in the family also because I have two cousins who are artists,” he noted.

The artist’s stated his inspiration comes from emotions and sometimes he is moved to draw because of the beauty of an object. He enjoys painting “things that have an expression or an action.” Darnell also has a knack for creating miniature sculptures such as model bikes and cars. Once he made a small clay sculpture of his grandfather.

???????????????????????????????“I received many contracts to make pieces for Guyexpo and one time I made a logie for Indian Arrival day. For me, art is a form or relaxation, it eases my stress, puts me in a different world that I don’t even realise until you snap me out of it. It allows me to have things my way,” Darnell disclosed.

Through his artwork, Darnell revealed, he paints hidden messages on pertinent issues affecting the world. He also enjoys painting about the simple pleasures of life and the loss of those pleasures.

“Technology is partially killing art in Guyana. Things can be done much faster and cheaper with a computer.  How many sign boards and pictures are hand- painted these days?  We need more rewarding competitions and publicity. If it was possible for people to make a living as an artist, it would drastically improve the art industry in Guyana. Personally to have a job like that would be a dream come true,” he declared.

'Vintage' (2010)The artist encouraged youths who want to pursue studies in art, to keep practicing and be determined to develop themselves despite challenges.

Darnell’s most recent paintings can be viewed at the ongoing Ninth National Drawing exhibition at Castellani House.
